The Rotary Club of Benoni Van Ryn decided that for Mandela Day this year that they would assist God Knows Community Organisation (NPO) in feeding over 200 school-going children as well as a few elderly people in Wattville, Benoni. And WOW! What a day it was. It was a truly humbling experience.
The God Knows Community Organisation (NPO) is a feeding scheme for young children in Wattville. At the moment they are only able to feed the children 3 times a week, but would like to feed them 5 times a week. Teenage headed households are very common in the community, together with HIV/AIDs affected children. The NPO feels that they are able to make a difference and are able to uplift their quality of life.
The Rotary Club of Benoni Van Ryn's aim for Mandela Day was to provide the children with a celebratory meal and give assistance to the NPO in preparing, cooking and dishing out the food. We managed to serve pap & iNyama, coleslaw, beetroot salad, yoghurt, malva pudding & custard, apples, oranges, bananas, frozen pops, popcorn, suckers which was enjoyed by all.
A very big Thank You! to the organisations that sponsored towards the groceries - it all went a super long way and we all were very grateful.
Another big Thank You! goes out to all the extra hands that volunteered to help with the day! All the Rotarians & Rotary Ann's of Benoni Van Ryn, Carol Berman, Christie Kruger, George Shoniwa, and Masiiwa Chabuka - your help was invaluable!
