Hippo Rollers are 90 litre water drums which enable people to transport up to 5 times more water to their homes and food gardens. The Rotary Club of Benoni Van Ryn collaborated together with the Rotary Club of Gibsons (Canada) and Warmbaths (Bela Bela) to bring the community of Vingerkraal a solution to them transporting safe water to their homes and vegetable gardens. The Rotary Club of Gibsons raised R 310 800 to fund the purchase of 148 Hippo Rollers - there were enough for one roller to be shared between every two households in the village.
This project has positively impacted the lives of the people in the Vingerkraal Village, as they are now able to transport safe water a lot easier and quicker, and there is more time available to spend on education, household tasks and food production.
